Poitiers, 1356.

La veille de la bataille...The eve of the battle ...

Hello exervyone,

our first big battle in medieval period…Jean II vs Black Prince.

September in the year of grace 1356.

Since several weeks Edward Plantagenet, also known as the Black Prince, devastates much of Bergerac, Perigord, Nontronnais of Confolentais, Northwest Limousin, Marche, the Boischaut, Champagne Berry, Berry, Sologne, South Touraine and Poitou.

After obtaining funds to raise an army, John II pursuies troops of the Black Prince, and ends up in front of her on the morning of September 19, after the Truce of God Sunday 18.

Situation : three
French attack columns. The English are very less in number,
Roy wants to fight quickly. What he does not know is that in the midst of the
battlefield is a marsh, unfavorable to travel, even less to armored troops!

The Count of Salisbury and his troops, protected by piles and bulwarks.

For the occasion, we have new units painted in the colors of all the great lords of the battle...
... Count Sufolk here and his troops in the second line ...

The center and the right wing of the French army. As agreed, most of the knights are walking ...

In the colors of Champagne, valiant spearmen distinguish, far away, the English at noon.

Fourth round, the French are beginning to understand: in dark
color, swampy area is drawn. Inside, their movement is divided by two ... the first arrows fall...no question of retreat, members of the Order of the Star never retreat, they have sworn!

Jean II le Bon in person scans his troops, with many knights. Before him, the soldiers trample. When he smells a slight odor of putrefaction, he understands ...
Too late ... half of his army is entangled in the marshes.

French right wing: we welcome Serge and Alexis by a rain of arrows.
Quickly the French lose their mercenaries, because of their low morale ...

The progression in the marshes: Gauthier de Brienne and Arnoul Audrehem see their men pierced by English arrows ... but they continue, mired in the marshes and in their pride ...

Farm of Maupertuis,  only in a few meters of Alex, the losses are heavy but the contact is imminent ...
the first French lines have not fallen in vain!

Dernières toises avant les mêlées..."Hardis compagnons"
Latest yards before the melee ... "Hardis companions"

4pm : half the French army is in retreat, but the English, tired and hungry, fear close combats ...

And soon, we distinguish lily flowers in the valley...

It is in the center that finally will be played the battle, in the center where
in a monumental crash light troops cross stakes, soon followed by pikemen and knights.

Intense was the last round: the Black Prince charges Jean II ... the dices are rolled ...
and the King of France falls, knee injury! Doubt and panic in the French ranks ...
Even though they fared better than in reality, the French team retreats...English victory!

Fin de bataille...End of battle...

And the historical end  according to Delacroix:"Père, gardez-vous à gauche, Père, gardez-vous à droite!"

Merci à vous, Many thanks!

Bienvenue à, Welcome to...

  9. "Yeah, I used to be King of France, then I took an arrow to the knee..."

Excellent battle report, but then I expected nothing less - a near-run thing though! And King Jean appears to have escaped years of honorable captivity in England, which must be a relief!

    1. They tried to do that, Serge on the right, Dimitri on the left...but our best archers were there, Dimitri's troops have routed quickly, Serge has resisted but on the last turns he fled! In fact, I think this battle is really hard for the French...without horses!
      Thanks Bar!

Plus, it's hard to be a mercenary when your fellow fighters are dying all around you, and you hear that the Franc's value is falling too!
