1809, Eckmühl!

Rally! Alles gegen Napoleon!

Hello everyone,
After his defeat in 1805, Austria only thinks of revenge.
On April 22, 1809 the Archduke Charles is confident. More than in reality.
It has in fact 12 battalions of grenadiers De Rohan division.
This what if looks so much more balanced than 200 years ago.
It is up to us Austrians to show us worthy of this initiative of the General Staff.

Scattered in the woods, the first French units we meet ...
A little further, the allied states of France are already bombarding us, and behind them the cuirassiers of Nansouty division are waiting for the right moment to charge.

💥Et ces bombardements sont meurtriers!💥
💥And these bombings are deadly!💥

On a forced march, our grenadiers are sent to Thazmassing. In the background you can see that the fighting is already intense with Montbrun's division, we must act quickly!

Après quelques mouvements stratégiques notre what if prend forme : nous allons attaquer les Français sur la droite, et refuser notre aile gauche. Risqué mais jouable...
After some strategic moves our what if takes shape: we'll attack the French on the right, and refuse our left wing. Risky but playable ...

At Pfelkoffen the Württemberg cavalry rushes on our positions.

"Hold on tight!" exclaims the Grenzers' officer, ostentatiously raising his hat."Mut!!"

It must be said that in the center the French of Davont are very numerous, the Duke of Auerstaedt must now attack without restraint to take the decision ...

Mid game a maximum tension between French team in a hurry to vainquish the grenadiers and Austrians fiercely defending each meter.

In the center  the French attack is violent. Our Austrians are courageous, but under the number they must retreat ... And the cuirassiers are, this time, ready to charge!

It's a human tide, here the Bavarians trampling the fields of wheat ... and the enemies.

The soothing gesture, the Austrian officer urges gunners to hold their rank, even if the dead and wounded are in the tens, even if some are tempted to flee ...

3 pm. The heavy cavalry is engaged on both sides ... Who will claim victory?

Undecided, the battle is indecisive ...
The opportunity to take stock in two minutes of sound and light ...

4pm. Austrian light squadrons engage in delaying missions, courageous, necessary but deadly.

The following? A sacrifice of our lines, supported by the artillery ...
Hold, we must hold until the evening ... Davout must not be enthroned Prince of Eckmühl!

We have two laps remaining ... For the victory, we have to hold the village on our right wing.

Harassed but standing. And winners. The sun will not always shine for our officers,
but today they have shown initiative ... and that was another story.

Merci à tous, Thanks,

Phil.

  4. It was lovely to see the Austrians get a taste of it (I`ve always enjoyed fielding and painting these since my early love of War and Peace). But I was more excited to see the Württemberg troops enter the fray. It was wonderful to see the Württembergische Armee (rarely seen on a wargame table) being used so effectively.. if not devastatingly: especially interesting for me as I am currently painting Württemberg Jägers for "Chosen Men" and find them fascinating to paint and learn about.

  6. Always a pleasant surprise when I see one of your classic AARs. The splendour of it all is breathtaking I always find. Although currently I`m in a quandary (and one I must resolve before to much longer).... whether to sink my time into collecting the Württembergers and concentrate on quasi Swabian Circle imagi-gaming (in true Ruritanian style).. then swing them over into the Peninsular for a bit of "Sharpe" when I want a change, or whether to follow my dream, and amass my resources for The Hundred Days, and relive Napoleon`s last hurrah in intricate detail (I do so love narrative mini campaigns I can string out and make last a while).

Excellent post Phil, as always you never disappoint.
