Year of Grace 1203. Constantinople is besieged. But on the morning of July 17th, surprise ... An de Grâce 1203. Constantinople est assiégée. Mais au matin du 17 juillet, surprise... |
Une année plus tôt...
A year earlier ...
A year earlier ...
Summer 1202, the Crusader army meets in Venice, blessings before embarking ...
|
Parchemin du XIII ème siècle...XIIIth century Parchment ... |
Mais il reste encore beaucoup à payer...
But there is still much to pay ...
It was then that Alexis IV Ange offers the Crusaders to pay their debt in exchange for their help to recover the throne of Byzantium, then in the hands of the usurper, his uncle Alexis III Ange.
In the morning of July 17 in the Byzantine army tries a surprising exit ... |
Inside the walls, the silence ... "workshops" of Constantinople holding their breath. |
First round: Ronie on my left, we attack Benoit's Crusader troops ... |
My Byzantine army, with shining armors, advance to the rhythm of heavy footsteps. |
Confrontation imminente sous les remparts de Constantinople. Imminent confrontation under the walls of Constantinople. |
Hastily, Benoit's knights donned their armor and ride their steeds. |
A little ahead of his lines, his infantry scans the horizon. |
Quelques piques sont déjà brandies, prêts à réceptionner nos charges. Some brandished pikes are already ready to receive our charges. |
My first charges on the center right, heavy losses but I advance. |
I must say that I got the help of some brave Arab mercenaries ... |
Un contingent fort utile contre les Croisés... A very useful contingent against the Crusaders ... |
And finally from the ramparts, our warriors see the Crusaders retreat ... victory! |
Actually Minor victory, Benoit is forced to retreat, but we do not have the resources to pursue him, our armies are exhausted. The siege is not broken ... but that's another story!
Notes historiques :
Historical notes :
- A result close to the historical reality: after the surprise, the Crusaders were near defeat, but the Byzantines did not profit of their advantage.
- The presence of Arab allies has not been proven.
- The usurper Alexius III fled at nightfall despite its success ... and this is Alexis IV was crowned co-emperor August 1, honoring the pact with the crusaders.
Merci à tous,
Phil.

SupprimerStunning Phil but, at the same time, it made me a little sad that I know this is one period I'd have loved to have played, but am realistic enough to know I'll probably never get there now. At least I can read your great report as some form of comfort, I suppose. Just beautiful!
RépondreSupprimerIf you come to France one day, may be...Anyway, thanks a lot for your sweet commment, much appreciated!
SupprimerVery nice battle and a unique period to game in. The Arab commander on a camel is neat. Any idea of what manufacturer made that figure? Not seen it before. Everything was painted very nicely.
