Sous les remparts de Carcassonne...Under the ramparts of carcassonne...

To the sound of drums, under the watchful eye of Protestant leaders, mobile shelters are going
out of the enclosure: decision is made to engage battle with the Catholic ...

Hello everyone!
Our last game: Carcassonne, in the sixteenth century, was besieged by the Catholics.
During the war of religion, Protestants decided to leave the walls and confront the attackers.

Christopher and Alexander , the besiegers, organize their troops.

First round: the armies are deployed, pikes and cavalry advancing towards the enemy.

My original plan: attack on the left wing, and denial of the right ...

From the ramparts, some civilians, starved by the siege, are front row seat to see the battle.

The mobile shelters are getting out the city,  they will serve me protection on my right wing ...

Christophe is advancing its gendarmes and cuirassiers, protected by musketeers and cannon organs.

Second turn viewed from the Catholic   side : the wheat field, in the middle of the battle, is held by   my infantrymen  ...

Protected by pikemen, Protestant  knights are leading the center of the device.

3rd turn : on my left wing, my heavy cavalry stays behind while the reiters and the average cavalry
will harass the troops of Alexander.

Black  Gendarmes , proud and self-confident, lead the left wing of the Catholic army ...

Far from the front, the captain ordered the Protestant offensive ... "Fastly, attack those papists!"

The din of battle on turn 5, the attack on the left wing is engaged,  my shots are effective in the whole but the arquebusiers associated with my pikemen suffer losses and are pinned...damned!

These are then the pikemen of Alexander who take advantage and charge my musketeers ...

Tour 5: on my left things do not go very well, I decide
to continue the attack, but many of my men fall ...

Never mind! My halberdiers and heavy cavalry threw themselves on the enemy artillery, flanked by shooters ...
the fire do not stop the brave!

This is serious: Alexandre stands up to try to bring the final blow while Christophe think the final offensive.

Il fallait s'y attendre! Alexandre contre-attaque, et mon aile gauche craque!
Un point de victoire pour les catholiques...
It was to be expected! Alexander couter-attack, and my left wing cracks!
One victory point for the Catholics...

7th turn : the Catholic army holds victory, I lost almost half of my men, dead or fleeing ...
but the opponent nevertheless seems feverish, thereby I engage the rest of my army!

Part of my right wing : peasants behind makeshift shelters ... they suffice to
slow   charges and stop a few shots while my center tent all for everything...

Christophe saw my pikemen tired after a fight, try the unthinkable: his heavy cavalry charge! There will lose many men killed by my picks, but my unit flee, dazzled by their courage ... and the sunlight reflected
on their gleaming armor!(Remind you of something?)

This time, for sure, the victory is played on a detail ... the last dice rolls are crucial, and I'm trying to finish with some luck! As stated Charles IX, More deaths, fewer enemies!

Alexandre doit fuir!
A symbol: the two armies are now close to the rupture, and  fanatic  Catholic monks
urge their few remaining troops on the battlefield to hold my fire ... but my arquebuses will
kill their tenacity! Alexander must flee!

Proud gunners, you are rewarded! The enemy stops its progression under fire , then retreats in order at first,
but soon cries of panic and noise leakage are linked ... Christopher flees too!

very tense  end ! Alexander and Christopher retreat, while my
center is on the verge of breaking the morale!

Catholics are packing: this time, the Protestants remain masters of the place. We hear a few screams from helmets of black gendarmes"We will be back, heretics Huguenots," ...

blasonWire victory for my brave soldiers ... in reality this battle has not occurred under the ramparts,Carcassonne has been a stronghold for Catholic in religious wars, but around villages as Limoux or Bram...the few Protestants who resided inside Carcassonne were made hunted or killed without a real battle ...

The food is delivered in the city, victory!

Warmly welcomed by Catholics a few years later, Charles IX stays in Carcassonne in 1564,
during his "Royal turn of France"...but that's another story...

      A bientôt!

  7. Great battle report. The deployment of the battlefield mobile shelters was a smart tactic. This is 1st time for me, if I am remembering correctly, that I have seen this vehicle used in combat. Nice!

  11. I say this almost every post but THIS army may be my all time favorite. It is so beautiful with so much color and pagentry. I see so much color, so much detail and such wodenderful brushwork. Medieval armies are some of the most time consuming to paint...but so lovely when finished.

Great report and way to steal victory from the jaws of defeat!
